Shrewsbury Town reviews.....

Postby ACDon » Sun Feb 09, 2020 10:25 am

Not the most entertaining game of football to watch, the conditions played a part, in the end, despite the fact we finished the stronger side, I suppose it was just about a fair result.

After a nice pre match social in the Bulls Head, it was good to hear Russell Martin had named an unchanged side from last week's 2-0 win against Wycombe, I don't think there are many sides who relish the thought of facing our front three of, Nombe, Healey and Morris. We took the shuttle bus from the bus station and made our way to the Montgomery waters meadow stadium and arrived in good time for the kick off. The first half was pretty even with very few clear cut chances for either side, but there was one bizarre moment when Murphy (the Shrews keeper) clattered into Morris who was running onto a throw in, it was right at the other end of the pitch so was difficult to see exactly what happened, the Ref initially awarded us a penalty, then appeared to change his mind to a free kick, then finally awarded us a corner. A note to the powers to be at the EFL, don't give this Ref a big game to referee at Millwall. During the half time interval the weather took a change for the worse, the wind whipped up and as a result the standard of football suffered, it was difficult to take a dead ball kick without the ball running away. When Shrewsbury took the lead on 62 minutes with a well taken goal I think a lot of Dons fans thought that was it, we would then fold, but that was not to be, we fought our way back into the game and created chances, though sadly those chances never fell to the right man until the 77th minute when Healey pounced to put us level at 1-1. Instead of settling for a draw we went all out for the win with Healey and Nombe both hitting the woodwork with the keeper beaten, with just a bit more luck and maybe a couple of those chances falling to the man, we could easily have came away with all three points.

A bitter sweet day for Lee Nicholls whose performance consisted of some superb saves mixed with some poor distribution, I'm sure this is an ongoing work in progress at the training ground but against a better side we could easily have lost yesterday due to his poor decision making regarding distribution. A keeper's job playing for a side that plays out from the back like we do isn't easy and IMO he is worth persevering with.

Another gripe I have is; why did we concede 4 fouls and get 2 players booked and Shrewsbury 14 fouls but only get 1 player booked? It wasn't really a dirty game and there wasn't many bad tackles, to me those stats and the penalty/free kick/ corner incident all add up to suggest yesterday's Ref (Wright) was bit of a "homer".

Any thoughts?

Another excellent report AC.

I was listening to the 3CR commentary and they concur with you in two points. They said that the whole of the commentary box, theirs & ours, thought it was a penalty and couldn't understand the referee changing his mind and they couldn't understand how Houghton got booked and that their bad fouls didn't warrant a booking. An interesting side note, that the only Shrews player that did get booked was Ebanks-Landell, an ex MK Dons loan player.

I know fans complain about refs, sometimes justifiably, sometimes not and refs are human, so can make mistakes; but I hope the EFL look at this ref, as the decisions were perplexing and I wonder if in this instance there was some unconscious bias at work. Bizarrely he seems to have refereed two Shrews EFL trophy matches last season and three this season and that can't be right.
